I was tempted to leave the black square against a blank canvas background as a sharp contrast, since I managed to keep all of the pigments, including blood from the heads that emerged as they thawed, contained within it.
All of the detail came from carefully tipping the piece in all directions several times as it dried, ensuring nothing seeped under the frame. There are also very visible slug trails, which are always a pleasant surprise.
Instead of leaving a white background, I opted to try a new technique by applying turmeric directly to the canvas and allowing the soaked cheesecloth to slowly do its thing. The color is far more striking than when I steep the turmeric with the other pigments.
All in all, it was a resounding success.
